Managing API Keys & Secrets with Bitwarden: Agent-Level Security

How to use the bitwarden skill to securely manage secrets in an OpenClaw environment.

Team · · 8 min read

As you scale your AI employees, the number of API keys and login credentials you need to manage grows exponentially. Storing them in plaintext .env files is a major security risk. If your machine is compromised, every service you use is at risk.

The solution? Bitwarden CLI (rbw) integrated into OpenClaw.

1. Why Bitwarden for AI Agents?

OpenClaw's bitwarden skill allows your agents to fetch credentials on-demand.

  • Secrets Management: Securely store API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, Firecrawl, etc.).
  • Password Generation: Automatically generate and store passwords for new accounts.
  • Shared Access: If you have multiple agents or a team, use a shared Bitwarden vault.

2. Setting Up the rbw CLI

To use the bitwarden skill, you first need the rbw (Rust Bitwarden) CLI installed on your machine.

# Install rbw (e.g., on macOS)
brew install rbw
# Configure your email
rbw config set email user@example.com
# Authenticate
rbw login

3. Workflow: On-Demand Credential Fetching

Imagine a subagent tasked with sending a marketing email. Instead of hardcoding the SMTP password, it uses the bitwarden skill.

  • Agent Instruction: "Fetch the SMTP password for marketing@hangryfeed.com from Bitwarden."
  • Command: rbw get "SMTP Marketing"
  • Security Note: The password is only in memory for the duration of the task, never saved to disk in the workspace.

4. Technical Artifact: Secure .env Generation

You can use a subagent to generate a temporary .env file from your Bitwarden vault:

# Subagent Task:
1. Fetch 'OPENAI_API_KEY' from Bitwarden.
2. Fetch 'FIRECRAWL_API_KEY' from Bitwarden.
3. Write these to a temporary .env.tmp file.
4. Delete the file after the main task is complete.

5. Security Best Practices

  • Master Password: Never store your Bitwarden master password in the workspace. Use a CLI agent (like rbw-agent) to keep the vault unlocked for your session.
  • Least Privilege: Only give the agent access to the specific folders in Bitwarden that it needs for its tasks.
  • Audit Logs: Use Bitwarden's event logs to see when and how your agents are accessing secrets.

Conclusion: Security by Default

At Hangryfeed, we believe security should be baked into every agentic workflow. By using Bitwarden, we ensure that our AI employees are both powerful and safe.
