The Era of the Blob: Proto-Danksharding (EIP-4844)

How 'Blobs' of data are about to make Layer 2s 10x cheaper.

The biggest cost for a Layer 2 (like Arbitrum or Base) isn't the code—it’s the Rent they pay to Ethereum. To keep your transactions secure, L2s have to store their data on the Ethereum mainnet. Until now, they’ve had to use "Calldata," which is expensive because every Ethereum node has to store it forever.

Proto-Danksharding (EIP-4844) introduces a new type of data storage: The Blob.

What is a "Blob"?

A Blob (Binary Large Object) is a big chunk of data that is attached to a transaction.

  • The Difference: Unlike normal Ethereum data, Blobs are Temporary. They are automatically deleted by Ethereum nodes after ~18 days.
  • The Result: Because the data isn't stored "Forever," it is drastically cheaper.

Why 18 Days?

Layer 2s only need their data to be available long enough for people to check for fraud (the "Challenge Period"). After 18 days, the data is no longer needed for security, so it can be purged.

The Impact on Fees

EIP-1559 made gas predictable, but EIP-4844 makes L2s Cheap. Early estimates suggest that "Blob-space" could reduce the cost of using a Layer 2 by 10x to 100x.

This is the "Scaling Milestone" that makes $0.01 transactions a reality on Ethereum. It turns Ethereum from a "Expensive Boutique" into a "Global Utility" for the masses.
