The Un-Tradable NFT: Soulbound Tokens (SBTs)
Why the future of Web3 identity isn't about selling—it's about staying.
The word "NFT" is usually associated with "Selling." But what if the most valuable NFT you could own was one you could never sell?
These are Soulbound Tokens (SBTs), a concept introduced by Vitalik Buterin to bring "Reputation" and "Identity" to the blockchain.
The Concept of the "Soul"
In Web3, your wallet is your "Soul." An SBT is a non-transferable NFT that is permanently "Bound" to your soul. If you earn a degree, a professional certification, or a "Member of the Year" award, it is issued to you as an SBT.
Why "Non-Transferable"?
Reputation is only valuable if it can't be bought.
- If you can buy a "University Degree NFT," it is worthless as a signal of intelligence.
- If you can buy a "Trusted DAO Voter SBT," the DAO’s governance is broken.
By making the tokens non-transferable, they become a true reflection of the person behind the wallet. They prove you actually did the work or earned the status.
The Use Cases
- De-Undercollateralized Lending: If a bank can see your "Credit History SBTs," they can lend to you without asking for crypto as collateral.
- Anti-Sybil Voting: A DAO can give 1 vote to every "Human ID SBT" holder, preventing one person from making 100 accounts to cheat a vote.
- Medical Records: Your health history could be an SBT, private to you, but verifiable by any doctor you authorize.
SBTs are the "Social Layer" of the blockchain—the transition from a "Casino for Tokens" to a "Civilization for People."
